Mars Attacks

(Mars Attacks after a battle with Hellrazer)

Mars Attacks was an idea of my dads originally. He wanted to design a shell spinner bot that closely resembled a typical flying saucer. We picked out a suitable steel shell from a cooking store and started planning things out. We quickly realized we were going to be overweight quick, and with the event drawing near the current design was getting more difficult to implement.

We ended up scrapping the shell spinner design and opted for a thwackbot style spinner which would look the same. We used the Lynxmotion 19:1 280 sized motors with new motors to make a very fast drivetrain. Then buy putting the wheels very close to one another, we able to spin quite fast.

Mars Attacks went 0-2 at the event but I was still happy with its performance. It got beaten quite handily by Hellrazer when we kept getting hung up on his wedge. And we lost a close decision after smacking Botweiler around a whole bunch. At any rate it sure was a blast to drive after I got used to it. We plan on rebuilding MA as a beetle for next time, and we're trying for a true shell spinner too!

Update: July 2006. Mars Attacks was upgraded to its beetle form. We used a aluminum ATV rim cut in half for the shell. The walls are 1/8" aluminum and the teeth are .1" steel.

You can see a video of its first spinup here.
